The Mumbles Train

The Mumbles Train was, when commissioned in 1807, the first passenger-carrying railway in the world. It was initially horse-drawn, then steam-powered, and in 1929 was replaced by the electric train (the tram). Until 1960, when it closed, the tram could transport thousands of people very quickly along its track from Rutland Street in old Swansea Town to Mumbles pier.

Mumbles Head

Two islands form Mumbles Head with the outer island housing the Mumbles Lighthouse (built in 1794). To the west around the bay lies Mumbles village and pier, the final stopping point of the famous railway system. It was off Mumbles Head in 1947 that all members of the Mumbles Lifeboat lost their lives trying to aid the ship Samtampa.

Village of Mumbles

Mumbles village as seen in 1818 is a far cry from the village of the 21st century. Now it is the entrance to the gower peninsula with its tasteful resteraunts, shops and wine bars. Now embracing a residence of Catherine Zeta Jones, and once-frequent haunt of Dylan Thomas, it was also the home of the Mumbles Train (introduced in 1807 and the first passenger carrying train in the world).

The Mumbles Tram at West Cross Swansea Bay

The Mumbles tram on its way to Swansea Town, passing through West Cross. In the distance the two small islands of Mumbles Head and The Lighthouse (erected on the outer island in 1794) can be seen.
